Streets and Squares Porto Vecchio

Immagine di Porto Vecchio
It was in front of the "sea gate" that the city's original port, the so-called "Muel de Sant'Andè " (Mole of St. Anthony), was located.
In the sixteenth century, when the city was ruled by the duchess Isabel of Aragon, the port lay actually approximately on this spot and occupied the area extending between the moles of St.Anthony and St. Nicholas. It is instead in the area stretching to the north-west side of the city that the new port is situated. It was founded in the middle of the 19th century by the Bourbon sovereign Ferdinand II. In fact, it is still unknown where the older port lay. According to some historians, it was located in front of the Basilica of St. Nicholas; others claim that once there were two ports, one to the east and one to the west, in order to act according to which way the wind was blowing and the currents were flowing.
