Built in 1233 over an existing Norman fortress, it became a true castle under Emperor Frederick II and then the residence of his son Manfredi in 1259.
Under Charles V it was transformed into a modern fortress: quadrangular, built around a courtyard that is now used for theatre and music productions. The halls now contain the civic museum. It is surrounded by a wide moat which enhances its beauty.
