It can be said for sure that a Templar domus already existed in 1216 in Molfetta and was located by the church of S. Nicola, used as Preceptory domus of the Templar Knights who in the late twelfth and early thirteenth century had settled permanently in the city  take advantage of the port to take on board stocks, supplies and people to the Holy Land and probably also to better manage the properties they owned land in Molfetta.  The church of S. Nicholas was placed near the square where now is currently located the Town Hall and the premises that were once the sacred building have been transformed and nowadays is called  ‘Hall of Knights Templar’ used for meetings, conferences and exhibitions.

The church of S. Nicola belonged to the Knights Templar until the suppression of the order.
